About Dogs

When ever I have a dog I let him/her sleep on my bed and on the couches. Is that a bad habbit? I've had the dog for about 2 years should i just let him/her sleep on the furniture or start telling her no?

Actually it is. However, I have very large breed dogs and hardwood floors. I purchased a futon mattress and laid it on the floor in a corner for them to sleep on. They are prone to joint problems if left on only hard surfaces. The reason its a bad thing is it give the dog a position of status to share the alpha's (you and other humans) territory. Depending on your dogs temperament and aggression drive it could encourage a dog seeking higher status to show dominance. I know when I'm not home my dogs climb up and sneak a spot. They leave the tell tale hair. They jump off and try to act innocent the moment they hear the car pull up or the key in the door.

We are considering adding a dog to our family. We are seeking a calm small to medium size dog. Not an accessory type small dog, but a nice sweet tempered dog. Also, one who doesn’t shed (as long as I’m making a wish list here). Does such a dog exist?

You should consider getting an older dog. They are less hyper than a puppy in general. Most small dogs are fairly hyper just by nature.

How much does it cost to maintain a dog per year? For life? Food, vet bills, toys, accessories. etc. Preferably I would like the average cost for a small 10-15 pound dog vs a lab sized dog. Thankyou in advance.

I have two 8 pound dogs and it costs me about 500.00 ea per year in food, (that's just food no treats bones etc.) I can't remember what my vet bill was last year but I think it was somewhere between 100.00 – 150.00 ea for yearly check up and titers (I don't vaccinate yearly). Then you need a crate 50.00 ish training treats (costs vary), collar, leash 30.00 ish. License (check where you live) toys (costs vary) So I am thinking you can safely say 800.00 – 1000.00 / year for the basics.

And like someone mentioned before your first year is more expensive.

Don't forget to factor in things like time off work for vet visits, obedience training, depending on the breed grooming costs will vary etc. And you really can go nuts and spoil the crap out of them with things would would never believe they make for dogs!! Wow there really is a lot to consider.

Good question I never really thought about how much my dogs cost before!
