Once I was in the kitchen when I heard the dogs playing in another room. I heard a yip and I went to check on them and there was the black dog’s collar laying on the floor and both dogs were just fine. Another time the brown dog must have gotten stuck on a branch of a bush because that’s where we found her collar. I shudder to think what might have happened in any of these instances had they been wearing “normal” collars. Breakaway collars are life savers.
We just aquired a new dog a few days ago when we were camping. She was a stray and was wandering around the campsites. So we brought her home and I just ordered her a Chinock breakaway collar a few hours ago. She will also be collar-less until it arrives. I have found our black dog’s collar laying in the yard several times from the brown dog grabbing it and getting stuck. These collars do not just fall off. They are designed to require a good tug to come off.
Yesterday I heard one my two Australian Shepherds of screaming hysterically. I rushed to the area of the house where they were playing. The screaming dog had his jaw caught under the others collar. Fortunately they have quick-release collars. I went online and found out breakaway collars. Either dog could have been hurt or died. I was lucky. Now I’ll be smart. I’ll leave them collar-less at home alone, until the Chinock breakaway collars arrive I ordered.
And thank you too! My dogs have had the collars for not quite a year and during that time I have found the black dog’s collar had been pulled off by the brown dog 5 different times. The brown dog’s collar was found one time laying on the ground by some shrubs she must have gotten tangled on. I hate to think what might have happened had the collars not pulled apart the way they were designed to do. I am so grateful for these life saving collars.
Thank you for posting this. This will help educate alot of pet owners.
kimberdoglvr you can Google breakaway collars. I ordered mine from Chinook & Co.
The customer service was excellent! I think I had the collars in about 3 days. The website says Chinook is the name of the lady’s dog who actually died because his collar got caught on something. The website is very informative. I was so impressed with this product and the need for these collars that I felt compelled to do this video. There are other places you can order them from too.
were do you get them ive never seen them i need one
Hi Lan,
Breakaway cat collars must have saved countless lives of kitties. I’ve had more than one dog at a time before and never had a “collar grabber” until this puppy. Now our 4 year old dog has started grabbing the puppy’s collar as well. Knowing the dangers of this I don’t think I would ever take my dogs to a dog park. Breakaway dog collars should be available at all pet stores.
Hey Mipian,
I always had breakaway collars for my cats when they were indoor-outdoor. I can’t tellyou how many times my one cat came back collarless!
I had no idea they made them for dogs too. My dogs don’t grab each others collars at all, so for me I’m not worried, but for others–especially if their dog gets loose frequantly.
sillyfurby the collars I got are called KeepSafe Break-Away Collars. I couldn’t find them in my local pet stores so I ordered them online and had them in about 3 days. They make a petite size for 7 to 10 inch necks. Oh, and they come in several nice colors too.
mipian – Thank you for posting this video. It is sooooo informative. I’ve just got to get these collars for my dogs! Do they come in Chihuahua size? Can you tell me where to find them?
htcsnavybrat I was unaware they made breakaway collars for dogs too until we acquired a second dog and I saw them grabbing at each other’s collars. At first I thought it was cute until it hit me just how dangerous it could be if they became entangled. Then I did some online research and was so happy to find these lifesaving collars. 96% of veterinarians have heard of collar related incidents within the last year.
Cool I didn’t know they made such a thing!
