does it have something to do with a phobia that he may have towards cloth and soft materials?or is it just part of him liking soft objects?

He/she is probably bored, and needing something to do. Get him some challenging toys, and take him out for a good long walk every day. Oh, and clean up your clothes off the floor. That’ll keep it from chewing on your stuff.
Chewing/destructive behavior is almost always a symptom of boredom. How much exercise is your dog getting? How structured is his daily routine? Dogs want and need structure to feel safe and satisfied. Him choosing to chew on soft objects means these types of materials appeal to him. But it’s nothing that can’t be solved with proper exercise and discipline.
It means your dog is bored and you are not training your dog properly.
Exercise your dog more frequently then bring him home and work on training sessions. Make sure you catch him in the act of destruction and reprimand him accordingly.
Well if they are tearing it up it may be because the try to fluff their pillows or bedding up but because they don’t realize that the material rips when their nails tear into it they do it anyway. That or they maybe burying stuff in their dog bed etc.
He’s bored and needs more exercise.
My dog did that for a while. It could be because your dog is bored. Also, your dog may need a little extra exercise (walk, run around outside) to burn off energy. Sometimes when dogs aren’t able to burn off energy, they tear things up or destroy things. Or, it could even just be a phase your dog is going through. My dog did that for a while but he just sort of grew out of it.
Like many undesirable canine behaviors, destructive habits usually develop because a dog is bored, lonely, or both.By nature dogs are curious and sentient beings; see that she has enough mental and physical stimulation to minimize the impulse to dig and chew.

Does he do this tearing up when you’re gone? I’m wondering if it’s a symptom of anxiety.
Also, my dog likes to create nests .. he once had a lot of fun tearing up a pillow that I didn’t really want him to tear up. But it made a great nest.
